During the First World War he served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, seeing action in Alexandria (1915-1916) and France (1917-1919). Following discharge from the army, Sam worked at the Vine Chemical Works in Widnes until his retirement.<br><br><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/johnhoughton.me.uk\/?page_id=83\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"83\">Gibson<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samuel Henry HOUGHTON married Elizabeth GIBSON. She was born in St Helens, Lancashire on the 29 November 1903.<br><br><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/johnhoughton.me.uk\/?page_id=103\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"103\">Connors (O&#8217;Connor)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mother&#8217;s father was Thomas CONNORS, born on the 5 September 1901 in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland.<br><br><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/johnhoughton.me.uk\/?page_id=93\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"93\">Walton<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas CONNORS married Mary Ann WALTON, who was born on the 29 January 1901 in Widnes, Cheshire.<br><br><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/johnhoughton.me.uk\/?page_id=152\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"152\">Cummings\/Common<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My great-grandfather, Samuel HOUGHTON married Elizabeth Mary CUMMINGS.
