Unsurprisingly, the surnames that I’ve been researching over the years are mainly those of my grandparents:

My grandfather Samuel Henry HOUGHTON was born on the 18 February 1898 in Widnes, Cheshire. During the First World War he served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, seeing action in Alexandria (1915-1916) and France (1917-1919). Following discharge from the army, Sam worked at the Vine Chemical Works in Widnes until his retirement.

Samuel Henry HOUGHTON married Elizabeth GIBSON. She was born in St Helens, Lancashire on the 29 November 1903.

Connors (O’Connor)

My mother’s father was Thomas CONNORS, born on the 5 September 1901 in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland.

Thomas CONNORS married Mary Ann WALTON, who was born on the 29 January 1901 in Widnes, Cheshire.

My great-grandfather, Samuel HOUGHTON married Elizabeth Mary CUMMINGS. At various time in her life she also seems to have gone by the names BOYL(E) and MADDOCK.
